4 Important Things to Carry When Traveling With Infants

Traveling is always an adventure. Packing is what plagues most people about it though. And for parents, it becomes even more tedious to try to remember to take along everything they need plus everything they need for baby.

If you’re a parent getting ready to travel with your baby, whether you’re traveling by car or train, there are 4 important things to carry when traveling with infants. Make sure to put them on your list when you’re packing and then check and double check that you’ve included them before you jet off to your destination.

Medical Kit

Don’t leave it to chance that you’ll be able to find what you need in another city. What if your destination is a family member’s house way out in farmland with the nearest store being a 30-minute drive away? What if you’re in another country where you don’t speak the language and you don’t know how to find a medical kit? It’s better to be safe than sorry. You can even make your own travel medical kit. It’s a good idea to include first aid and OTC medications for common maladies (or if applicable, any prescriptions that are needed) in your bag along with bandages and a portable infant thermometer.

Travel Bed

Even if you’re staying with family or friends, there’s no guarantee they’ll have a suitable place for baby to sleep. You should bring along a travel bed that is safe for use with infants. This way, you all can sleep peacefully. Not every hotel has a crib for use and even those that do may not be up to safety codes. Do you want to leave your sweet baby to chance? Didn’t think so. Other countries don’t offer cribs or cots in your room and seem confused by the request, so plan accordingly and you won’t be left in the lurch.

Baby Bottle

Babies need bottles if they aren’t breastfeeding. And even if they are, if you’re expressing your milk with a pump (which you should bring along too), you’ll need somewhere to put your breast milk. This is also nice so you can let other family members feed the baby while you enjoy your visit.

Formula milk

If you’re not breastfeeding though, you’ll need to make sure you take along enough formula to feed your baby during the trip. Even if you’re traveling domestically, you don’t want to wind up surprised at the supermarket in the place you’re visiting with a higher price than your local store carries it for or even chance not getting the right brand. Other countries will also have different brands and depending on which country you’re in, you may not feel comfortable with the formula that comes from there. An example of this is China, where many moms there were seeking out formulas imported from Australia and Europe after a contamination situation occurred.

As long as you can remember these things, you won’t get too upset when you realize you forgot to pack your socks. Happy travels!
